Sericulture Development Activity in Nepal

Country Strategy: Agricultural Perspective Five Year Tenth Plan

Sericulture is one of the priority commodities under High Value Crops (HVACs) group of APP (Agricultural Perspective Plan). APP has considered sericulture as one of the important cash crop for both irrigated and non-irrigated upland slopes of mid hills. Considering its importance in employment growth and potential support area for rural women employment and empowerment APP has projected ten-fold increase (0.5 to 5 thousand ha) in 20 years from base year 1995. Government of Nepal (GoN) has given the highest priority for Poverty Alleviation in the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2002 to 2007). At its end, the Plan has placed major emphasis on employment and income-generation in agriculture as well as development and promotion of cottage and small-scale enterprises.It has particularly sited the problems of women, children and other economically and socially disadvantaged groups. The plan is committed to ensure policies for quality egg, supply, development of quality nursery, promotion and strengthen of NGOs and private sector. The plan also emphasises their services in extension activities. Agro-industry promotion has been put as one of the development thrust of the plan. The agro industry/HMG has committed to strengthen both forward and backward linkage of production, policy reforms and soft loan capital through financial

institutions. Organizational set up in government level
Sericulture Development Section (SDS) located at Khopasi, is the main responsible organization of sericulture development in Nepal. It comes under Industrial Entomology Directorate, Department of Agriculture. Under SDS there are 5 cocoons producing farms in hills (Dhankuta, Dhunibesi, Bandipur, Syangja & Pokhara districts of Nepal), 2 in Terai (Bhandara & Ithari districts) & one Silk wormseed production Center in Bhaktapur district.
